‘Saving Face’, a documentary featuring British/Pakistani plastic surgeon, Mohammad Jawad has been awarded the Oscar for Documentary Short Subject, the 84th Academy Awards®

Saving Face the Oscar winning documentary, chronicles the work of pioneering plastic surgeon, Mohammad Jawad as he travels to his birthplace, Pakistan, to treat survivors of radically disfiguring acid attacks, the majority of whom are women targeted by family members. It will debut on HBO in the USA on 8th March, and be shown on Channel 4 in the UK in early April, after being screened as part of the Human Rights Watch Film Festival UK, on March 28th and 29th, 2012.

Acid attacks on women in Pakistan are a not uncommon, if un-spoken about phenomenon. SAVING FACE is the story of two survivors of such attacks — their battle for justice and their journey of healing through the pioneering surgical work of Mr Mohammad Jawad.

“I am so grateful for the Academy’s recognition of this film and the issues highlighted here. No-one who sees these women could fail to be moved. Each beautiful in their own way, their lives have been destroyed, their faces and bodies disfigured, often by members of their own families. They are the real heroes here. They have been ostracised from society following the terrible attacks that have been inflicted upon them. I merely try to restore God’s creation, which has been destroyed by such evil acts of human beings, in the best way I know how. I hope that awareness of the cause will help to eradicate this beast of a man-made disease from society.” Mr Jawad

Mr Jawad was catapulted to fame when the story of Katie Piper, the model disfigured by a vicious acid attack was made into a documentary by Channel 4, My Beautiful Face. As the surgeon who saved her face, is also a trustee of the Katie Piper Foundation.

Mr Jawad hopes that the public awareness generated by Saving Face will serve as a global platform for the establishment of a charitable foundation to enable him to build upon and expand his work with burns victims in Third World countries. He plans to set up the Sarvat Jawad Foundation, in honour of his mother, to additionally enable skills transfer and allow him to pass on his invaluable expertise to local surgeons.

Mohammed Jawad and the team at Nip n Tuck Surgery have been touched by the many letters and emails of support that have been sent in reference to the ‘Saving Face’ Oscar Nominated short-film which documents Mr Jawad’s work with acid burns victims in Pakistan. Here are just a few messages which have been so greatly appreciated:

Mrs Paenga, Australia
“Dear Mr Jawad – I have just finished reading an article about the wonderful, wonderful work you are doing and am writing this email to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the inspiration you are to me! I wish there were more people in this world like you, and don’t really know how to explain how much your beautiful soul, your generosity, compassion and the selfless giving of your gifted medical skills touched me. May God Bless you and your posterity forever.”

Angela, United Kingdom
“Your work is a true inspiration to us all. I wish you the very best with the incredible reconstructive work that you perform and I hope your Saving face documentary receives full international support and recognition!”

Rob Stephens, Australia
“Dear Dr Jawad – I read an article in my local newspaper in Australia about your work helping Pakistani women and children who suffered horrid abuse. Yes, your kind work is known here. All I can say is you are a hero. Not only from taking time out to help but I would imagine you getting some sort of response from local people who do these sort of things to women and children.

I admire women and children and to think that people can do such horror to them fills me with feelings that words cannot describe for I come from a broken family whose head of the family, the husband and father gave horrid abuse to his wife and my mother. Men who do these sorts of things to women and children are nothing but cowards and scum of the earth. Its people like you who help restore my faith in males. Bless you and take care.”
